Harlan County Lake is the second-largest lake in the
U.S. state ofNebraska . The reservoir is formed by a dam in theRepublican River , which starts inColorado and ends inKansas .The two closest towns are Republican City and Alma. Republican City offers fishing supplies, boat rentals, restaurants and cabins. When the lake is at normal pool, Alma is on the shore line of the lake and offers lodging, restaurants, stores, and churches.

In 1935, heavy rains resulted in destructive flooding, resulting in the construction of a dam.
From 1999 through 2006, draught lowered the lake level considerably. In 2007 and 2008, significant rain raised the lake above normal pool levels.
In 2006, the lake was the site of Harlan County Family Day.
