Harlan County Lake

Harlan County Lake

Harlan County Lake is the second-largest lake in the U.S. state of Nebraska. The reservoir is formed by a dam in the Republican River, which starts in Colorado and ends in Kansas.

The two closest towns are Republican City and Alma. Republican City offers fishing supplies, boat rentals, restaurants and cabins. When the lake is at normal pool, Alma is on the shore line of the lake and offers lodging, restaurants, stores, and churches.

Harlan County Lake is in Harlan County and is 7 miles from Kansas, 178 miles from Lincoln, Nebraska, 345 miles from Omaha, Nebraska, 356 miles from Kansas City, Missouri, and 568 miles from Chicago.

History

In 1935, heavy rains resulted in destructive flooding, resulting in the construction of a dam.

From 1999 through 2006, draught lowered the lake level considerably. In 2007 and 2008, significant rain raised the lake above normal pool levels.

In 2006, the lake was the site of Harlan County Family Day.
