Stewart has been an associate in baseball now for fifty-nine baseball seasons. Stewart is currently managing his thirty-ninth season with the Kansas City Royals.

In 1986, he was both, Scouting Director and Player Development. From 1987-1997, he served as only a Scouting Director. The next two years, from 1998-1999, Stewart became the Senior Special Assistant to General Manager. From 2001-2005, Stewart become the Senior Advisor to General Manager.
