Alaska and western Canada toArizona andNew Mexico . It is a resident of many habitat types. This is a perennial herb producing a basal patch of long leaves which are variable in shape but can reach nearly 40 centimeters in length. There is no stem, but severalinflorescence s on tall, erect, stemlike peduncles which can be up to half a meter tall. The inflorescence holds a flower head up to 3 centimeters wide lined with woolly phyllaries. The head is filled with ray florets with squared, toothed tips in shades of deep orange to red. There are occasionally yellow flowers. The heads are ligulate, lacking disc florets. The fruit is anachene which may be over a centimeter long with its long beak and bristly pappus included.External links
