Lilly Rush is a fictional character in the TV series "Cold Case". Lilly is a homicide detective and works cold cases for the Philadelphia police department. She is portrayed by Kathryn Morris. Character History

Early Life

Lilly was born roughly around 1970, but there are no real indications as to her age in the show. She was raised in the destitute Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia and is familiar with the area. Lilly's father left the family when she was young and her mother Ellen was an alcoholic and a negligent parent. Her bad parenting skills are illustrated when Lilly recounts her mother abandoning her in a crowded shopping mall to get drunk until she is called for over the loudspeakers by security. Lilly also has a younger sister, Christina, whom she does not get along with after Christina had an affair with Lilly's fiancee.

In the episode 'The Woods' it is revealed that as a child, Lilly was mugged when her mother had sent her out at night to buy alcohol. A man chased her until she gave up and gave him her money, but he hit her in the face several times. This incident resulted in a broken jaw and five shattered teeth, and ultimately influenced Lilly to become a police detective.

Personal Life

In the show, little is known of Lilly's personal life, only her unstable home life as a child and teenager. She was engaged in 1996. She briefly dated A.D.A Kite in season one. In season three, a former love from Lilly's past, Ray, comes back to town. According to Lilly, she eloped with him to Tennessee when she was nineteen but neither of them had enough courage to get married. She also becomes involved with someone from a case in season three, Joseph. However, things faded with Joseph when he could not adjust to Lilly's priorities.

Lilly lives alone with her two disabled cats. She mostly dedicates herself to her work and displays pictures of past victims by her bed during cases.

Lilly and Scotty Valens

Scotty first appears in episode six of season one and from then on is a part of the team. While investigating, Scotty is Lilly's main partner and the two work well together. It is unknown whether or not Lilly and Scotty have any romantic feelings towards each other but it is clear that the detectives care about each other, as this shown on many occasions.

When Lilly's younger sister, Christina, tells her that she is seeing a cop, Lilly responds by inquiring as to who it is. When she found out Christina was seeing Scotty, she angrily likens it to the previous incident involving her fiancee. This may indicate Lilly's romantic inclinations towards Scotty.
