United States where it grows on beaches and in coastalwoodland and grassland. This is a perennial herb growing a flat, drooping, or erect stem; there is sometimes no actual stem and the upright part of the plant is all part of theinflorescence . The leaves are mostly basal and are variable in shape. They are up to 15 centimeters long. The tall peduncle of the inflorescence brings the maximum height near 45 centimeters. The flower head is up to 2 centimeters wide and lined with woolly phyllaries. It is filled with yellow, or less often orange to reddish, ray florets and no disc florets. The fruit is anachene a few millimeters long, not counting a beak which is much longer and the white pappus.External links
