She was born as Harriett Jolliff in
Manila, Arkansas onAugust 15 ,1927 . She was raised inDetroit, Michigan . While still in her teens, she ran away from home to dance with a carnival and was also convicted, along with several friends, of attempting to rob a candy machine, and spent more than a year in jail. After her release from jail she worked as a stripper under the name "Hot Honey Harlowe".On
June 15 1951 she marriedcomedian Lenny Bruce . They divorced onJanuary 21 1957 after having a daughter, Kitty. The two fought a custody battle over their daughter.
