Diego de Holgiun

Diego de Holguin (1486 -?) was a Spanish conquistador and the first mayor of San Salvador, in April of 1525. He conquered many towns in Mexico. Central America, the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico.

Holguin was born around 1486 in a Spanish town called Tona or Sona. He arrived in the Americas very young and settled in the Spanish colony in present day Dominican Republic in 1506. There he participated in the foundation of the cities of Aragua, Puerto Real and Ciudad de la Vega. Soon made a captain, Diego de Holguín participated in the conquest of Coactemalán, Izalco, and Cuzcatlán in present day El Salvador under the orders of Pedro de Alvarado. He was registered with the Santiago de Los Caballeros de Guatemala.

Along with Gonzalo de Alvarado, he was one of the founders of San Salvador and became its first mayor in April 1525.

In 2005, construction began of a highway located on the outskirts of San Salvador leading towards the west of the country. It takes the name of Diego de Holguin.
