Birth and Early Life

He was born May 25, 1869 in Vermillion, Minnesota to parents who had immigrated from Ireland. He founded the Catholic Association for International Peace in 1927.

Child Labor Amendment

He was a noted supporter of the failed Child Labor Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, even though he was opposed by the powerful Archbishop of Boston, Cardinal William O'Connell.
