- Camponotus nearcticus
The camponotus nearcticus ant or "smaller
carpenter ant " is a small black ant. The queen ant's size can range from 4-14 mm. Workers can range from 2-7.5 mm. It looks like the Lasius niger species or "commonblack garden ant ". This species can be distinguished from other subgenus by little amounts of erect hairs on the gena, limited erect hairs on the clypeal disc and finally by the color which is a concolorous dark brown-black.Habitat
This species lives virtually anywhere there is standing decayed wood to support its preferred nesting environment. It could be found in a backyard tree or pristine upland or floodplain forest and is nearly as ubiquitious as the black carpenter ant ( Camponotus pennsylvanicus).
