- Golden jersey statistics
Since the first
Vuelta a España in 1935, there have been 1,227 stages, up to and including the ninth stage of the2008 Vuelta a España . The race leader following each stage has been awarded the golden jersey.Although the leader of the classification after a stage gets a golden jersey, he is not considered the winner of the golden jersey, only the wearer. Only after the final stage, the wearer of the golden jersey is considered the winner of the golden jersey, and thereby the winner of the Vuelta a España.
Although the number of stages is 1,227, there have been 1,228 golden jerseys awarded, because after the first stage of the
1948 Vuelta a España ,Bernardo Ruiz andJulian Berrendero shared the lead and both received a golden jersey. As of 2008, 1,228 golden jerseys have been awarded in the Vuelta a España to 185 different riders.Individual records
