- Edwin Corboy
Edwin Wilkie Corboy (
24 August 1896 –6 August 1950 ) was anAustralia n politician. Born in Victoria, he was educated inWestern Australia at Perth Boys' School, after which he served in the military from 1915-1917. He returned as a clerk. In 1918, he was elected to theAustralian House of Representatives in unusual circumstances, winning the safe Nationalist seat of Swan for the Labor Party in a by-election. Corboy's election was due to the fact that both the Nationalists and the Country Party were contesting the election, so Corboy, in the "first past the post" voting system, received the highest number of primary votes and was elected. This unexpected event led to the introduction ofinstant run-off voting in Australia. As a result, in the 1919 elections, Corboy again won the primary vote, but was easily defeated on preferences by the Country Party'sJohn Prowse . Corboy, who was 21 when he was elected, remains the youngest person ever elected to the House of Representatives.cite web|last=Carr|first=Adam|title=Australian Election Archive|work=Psephos, Adam Carr's Election Archive|url=http://psephos.adam-carr.net/countries/a/australia|year=2008|accessdate=2008-08-01]After his defeat in 1919, Corboy remained involved in Labor politics and in 1919 was elected to the
Western Australian Legislative Assembly as the member for Yilgarn; in 1930, he transferred to Yilgarn-Coolgardie, a new seat. He left the Assembly in 1933. In 1939 he was again called to military service, serving until 1945, when he returned to Australia as a public servant in Perth. Corboy died in 1950.References
