Rhône-Rhine Canal

Rhône-Rhine Canal

The Rhône-Rhine Canal is one of the major waterways of France linking the Rhine and the Rhône and thereby the North Sea and the Mediterranean.

It is 217 miles (349 km) long.

The major arm of the canal joins the Rhine at Strasbourg, although a side branch leads from Mulhouse to Basel. The canal, built from 1784 to 1833 and opened in 1834, can be navigated by 300-ton craft, but carries only moderate traffic and is relatively unimportant.

Technically, it does not flow into either the Rhine or the Rhône, but into the Ill near Strasbourg and into the Saône River, a tributary of the Rhône.

A major project to revamp the canal was tabled in 1997.
