- Grense Jakobselv
Grense Jakobselv is a small settlement on the
Barents Sea at the mouth of theJakobselva river, inFinnmark ,Norway . It lies 60km by road east ofKirkenes .The river forms the border with
Russia , and there is a small post of the Sør-Varanger garrison of theNorwegian Army , from where border patrols are made. However there is no public border crossing at this point.In the village there is a stone chapel built in 1869, King Oscar II's Chapel. The church was built to reinforce Norway's territorial claim to the area, and was named after
Oscar II of Sweden and Norway .Grense Jakobselv is the point in Norway furthest by road from Oslo: 2,556 km by a route entirely within Norway, but about 600km shorter by a direct route through Sweden and Finland.
