Infanta Maria of Spain

Infanta Maria of Spain

Maria of Spain was the youngest child of Philip II of Spain and Anna of Austria. Her maternal grandparents were Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor and Maria of Spain while her paternal grandparents were Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and Isabella of Portugal. Only a few months after Maria was born her mother died, her father never remarried having had four wives in his lifetime. Maria had three siblings:

* Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia of Spain

* Catherine Michelle of Spain

* Philip III of Spain

All Maria's siblings reached adulthood but she didn't, she died in Madrid on the 5 August 1583, she was only three years of age. In 1598 her father died and her brother Philip became King of Spain, Isabella Clara Eugenia would become governess of the Netherlands and Catherine Michelle became Duchess of Savoy. Maria had a half brother, Don Carlos of Spain who she never knew since he died in 1568.
