The Lerderderg Pit

The Lerderderg Pit

The Pit is a safe, family friendly swimming hole approx 2.3km walk in from MacKenzies Flat. Surrounded by old river gums and local fauna, this beautiful part of the river still has a untouched feel to it. Old mines shafts exist in the area, and it has been advised by the park authorities to stay on the path, to aviod falling into any 100 year old super pits.

Completely enclosed by burnt orange Cliffs, this has been likened to "the kakadu of the south". However this can quickly change by frequent sightings of mountain goats. Which were introduced by scottish explorers back in the 19th century. Despite its serenity, the place has been home to many mountain goat killings by locals with Crossbows.
