50 metre rifle three positions is an International Shooting Sport Federation event, a miniature version of 300 metre rifle three positions. It consists of the prone, standing and kneeling positions, fired in that order, with 3×40 shots for men and 3×20 shots for women. The caliber is .22 Long Rifle (5.6 mm).

The men's match has separate commands and times for each position, giving each shooter 45 minutes to complete the prone part, 75 minutes for the standing part, and 60 minutes for the kneeling part, including sighting shots for each part. The women's match has an overall maximum time of 2 hours and 15 minutes. Slightly longer times are used if there is a need to compensate for slow scoring systems. Women's rifles may weigh up to convert|6.5|kg|lb, as opposed to convert|8.0|kg|lb for men, but after the switch from "standard rifles" to "sport rifles" this is now the only difference in equipment.

The top eight competitors reach the final, where the score zones are divided into tenths, giving up to 10.9 points for each shot. Both the men's and the women's final consists of ten shots from the standing position, with a time limit of 75 seconds per shot. The competition is won by the shooter who reachest the highest aggregate score (qualification + final, maximum 1309.0 for men, 709.0 for women).
