occupational therapist when she married William "Billy" McMahon in 1965. She was a Prime Ministerial wife for only two years, from 1971-1972. Her youngest child was born in 1971, during Billy McMahon's term as Prime Minister. During this term, the family continued to reside in the Sydney suburb of Bellevue Hill, except when Sonia was required to be inCanberra for official duties.Since the death of Billy McMahon in 1988, Sonia has continued with her socialite and charitable interests. She is a board member or patron of many charities, including the National Brain Foundation, the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation, the Australian Cancer Research Foundation, the Microsearch Foundation and Australia’s Sudden Infant Death Syndrome association.
