Plot summary

The Given Day is a historical novel set during the 1919 Boston Police Strike. The story focuses on Boston Police patrolman Danny Coughlin and talented baseball player Luther Lawrence. Danny is involved in the fight to unionize the Boston Police Department. Luther is dealing with the struggles of being a black baseball player in the early 20th century. When Luther moves to Boston from Tulsa he meets Danny and the two become friends. Together with Nora, Danny's wife, they deal with the hardships of living in Boston in the wake of WWI, where Spanish Influenza, racism, and social class division are constant struggles that Lehane's characters strive to overcome.
