Matthew Rose (born 1978 in Brighton) is an English bass.

Biography

He was born in Brighton in 1978. He studied at Seaford College, Petworth and at Christ Church University in Canterbury before gaining a place at the Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia in 1998. He studied voice there with Marlena Malas and Mikael Eliasen.

Performances

In 2003 he joined the then Vilar Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. His debut at Covent Garden was as Jonas Fogg in Sweeney Todd. While on the Programme he sang also in The Tales of Hoffmann, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Faust, The Rape of Lucretia, The Magic Flute, Tosca, Otello, Un ballo in maschera, La Gioconda and Orphee by Philip Glass. He has since returned as Tom, Un ballo in maschera; Zuniga in Carmen; Masetto in Don Giovanni; Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Colline in La Boheme.

He has performed Mozart's Figaro and Monk, Don Carlos for WNO, Bottom at Glyndebourne (for which he was the recipient of the John Christie Award) and in Lyon, Collatinus at Teatro Real, Madrid, Colline and Speaker at ENO and at the Opera Company of Philadelphia, New Jersey Opera Festival and at Garsington.

In concert he has sung with all the major British orchestras, at the Edinburgh, Aldeburgh and Cheltenham Festivals and in recital at the Wigmore Hall and St John's, Smith Square.

Recordings

He has recorded with Sir Colin Davis (Berlioz L'enfance du Christ and a Child of our Time for LSO Live), Sir Charles Mackerras (Mozart Vespers and Schubert Mass in E flat with Dresden Staatskappelle), Richard Hicox (Schubert Mass in E flat), Antonio Pappano (Tristan and Isolde) and a CD of Liszt songs with Iain Burnside.

Future

In the future he will be working at The Royal Opera, Glyndebourne, Houston Grand Opera, Opera de Lille, La Scala, Milan and the Metroplitan Opera in New York.
