Ultima (disambiguation)

* Ultima Thule in medieval geographies may denote any distant place located beyond the "borders of the known world."
* Ultima Sports Ltd, a manufacturer of sports cars based in England

In Classical Latin, "ultima" is the superlative form of the adjective "ulter, ultra, ultrum" (respectively masculine, feminine, and neuter singular forms) whose comparative form is "ulterior" for the masculine and feminine genders, and "ulterius" for the neuter. As a superlative, it denotes very great distance in translation, as in being on the "farthest" point or place of something, said often of geographically remote lands. The opposite of "ultimus, ultima, ultimum" is "proximus, proxima, proximum."

Etymologically, ultimus is probably not related to the past participle of "ulciscor" (take vengeance on), "ultus" (avenged).
