Edgar Priestley Swain

Edgar Priestley Swain (1881 - 1949) was the fourth Bishop of Burnley from 1931 until 1950 [ [http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/A2A/records.aspx?cat=055-pr3096&cid=-1&Gsm=2008-06-18 Details of Funeral service] ] . Educated at St John's College, Cambridge and Ripon College Cuddesdon , he was successively Curate of " Holy Trinity with All Souls, Birchfield" [“Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X] , Chaplain to the Bishop of Birmingham, Vicar of Putney and Rural Dean of Barnes before ascending to the Episcopate. A man “whose great gifts marked him out for preferment" ["The Bishop Of Burnley -Obituary" The Times Wednesday, Jul 27, 1949; pg. 7; Issue 51444; col E] , his scholarship was a great asset to the Church in the mid Twentieth century [“India and the Church: being impressions of some members of the Mission of Help”Swain, EP (Ed):London, SPCK, 1923] .
