Turklish

Turklish

Turklish (a portmaneau of "Turkish" and "English") refers to the language contact phenomenon that occurs primarily where native Turkish speakers frequently communicate in English, such as in Turkish expatriate communities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and among the students of the many English speaking universities of Istanbul.

The most common examples of Turklish speak arise with the combination of simple English sentences (with heavy Turkish accents) and common Turkish speech disfluencies, such as "ya," "yani," and "şey" as in "Vhut tha fuck, ya!?" or "Do you vant drink, şey, tea?"

A particularly humorous example of Turklish can be seen in an interview with Turkish National Football coach, Fatih Terim, where he proclaims that "everything is something happened" and refers to the scoreboard as a "tabla," the Turkish word for both table and backgammon [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XM2V3QLryM] .
