IAR CV 11

__NOTOC__ The IAR CV 11 was a Romanian fighter prototype in 1930, designed by Elie Carafori, and it was IAR's first original aircraft.

Development

IAR had been founded in 1925 as one of Romania's first aircraft manufacturers, and in 1930 it produced the CV 11, a single-seat fighter powered by a 600 hp 12-cylinder W-type Lorraine 12Fa Courlis engine.

Operational history

After completion of the initial flight testing program at Istres in January 1931, the decision was made to change the engine to a 500hp Hispano-Suiza 12Mc 12-cylinder Vee-type. The CV 11 then returned to Romania, where it made an attempt to complete the 500 km closed circuit speed record. However, an engine failure resulted in a forced landing which killed the pilot, Captain Romeo Popescu. Further development of the design led to the IAR CV 12.
