About the Festival

The International Children’s Festival is the region’s premier youth-oriented festival dedicated to performing, visual, and interactive arts, held each September at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Virginia. First conceived in 1971 as "International Children's Day", the Festival provides opportunities for children to share their cultures through the arts. Founder of the Wolf trap National Park for Performing Arts,Catherine Filene Shouse, also originated the festival.

The Wolf Trap National Park for Performing Arts is the nation's only national park devoted solely to the performing arts; and is located within Farifax County, one of the most diverse counties in the Washington metropolitian area.

The International Children's Festival is produced by the Arts Council of Fairfax County, a private non-profit corporation, in cooperation with the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts and the National Park Service. The 2008 International Children's Festival will take place during the week of September 8th with the public Festival on Saturday and Sunday, September 13th and 14th at Wolf Trap.

Gala

The Arts Council of Fairfax County also produces an International Children's Festival Gala to honor distinguished co-chairs and the guest countries. Over 600 corporate executives, elected officials, embassy representatives and friends of the arts share a wonderful international menu and enjoy performances by the visiting young artists on a center stage in the ballroom.

The 2008 distinguished Honorary Festival Gala Co-Chairs:

His Excellency Mr. Zhou Wenzhong, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China

His Excellency Mr. Pekka Lintu, Ambassador of Finland

His Excellency Dr. Kwame Bawuah-Edusei, Ambassador of Ghana

His Royal Highness Ambassador Zeid Ra’ad Al-Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

And will Feature International Guest Performers: Henan Youth Arts Performing Troupe – Zhengzhou, China; Kallet Ja Kaisat – Hollola, Finland; KaKe Dance Ensemble – Accra, Ghana; Zaha Cultural Center Troupe – Amman, Jordan; and 2008 International Children’s Festival featured performersScrapArtsMusic, a Canadian percussion ensemble.
