Team history

The concept of a university baseball team in Durham started with three students; Graeme Ford, James Boardman and Joel Taylor, in the summer of 2006 after discovering through facebook they had a mutual love of the game. The team was founded by James Boardman and Joel Taylor in the summer of 2006 as one of the Durham Students Union Societies. A recruitment drive was undertaken at the Fresher's Fair and a base of players was set up.

The team played its first match in June 2006 against the Nottingham Thieves which resulted in a 31-10 loss. Ian Wilson recorded the team's first stolen base and scored the team's first run. James Boardman recorded the team's first hit and RBI, while Joel Taylor recorded the team's first extra base hit. Nicholas Zieleniewski was the team's first pitcher and achieved the first strike out.

The team doubled its revenue in its second season in 2007 and signed up several experienced players while maintaining the core players from the team's inaugural season. In June, the team played a double header against the Nottingham Thieves and the UEA Blue Sox. The team's rematch against the Thieves resulted in a 18-6 loss although twelve of those runs came in the final inning. The Bishops lost to the Blue Sox 30-20 although again, ten of those runs were scored in the last inning.

2007 also saw the beginnings of a mixed softball team. In the future the society hopes to promote both softball and baseball and organise competitive matches for both.

The team continues to grow, promoting the sport throughout the university.

Team Name

The team name is in reference to the Bishops of Durham who possessed the power of kings within their jurisdiction.

Team Structure and Management

The society is run by an elected committee which is elected at the societies annual AGM, held in the university's Easter term. The current executive positions include: President, Treasurer, Women's Captain, Secretary and Social Secretary. Furthermore, the executive committee has powers to elect a team captain, assistant team captain and head coach. The committee organises matches and transport, looks after the clubs finances and organises practices among other things. Previous and present committees include:
