Product binning

Product binning

Product binning is the process of testing and sorting manufactured products into different classes of performance for the purpose of marketing and selling different product value at different prices. Products or parts are said to be "binned" when they have been sorted by such a process.

Examples

Examples from the semiconductor industry include speed or power binning for DRAMs or microprocessors. For a given manufacturer and product all performance levels come from the same design and manufacturing process. That is, there is typically no "special" version or production line used to create faster semiconductor parts within the same part number. The product bins used for a product are constructed to allow for different prices for different performance levels.

Binning relies on the fact that manufacturing processes result in products that have variances in specific performance parameters. These parameters can be measured at end-of-line test and individual product units can then be categorized based on the performance "bin" indicated by testing.
