Gunther Pattern

Gunther Pattern

The Gunther Pattern or Gunther Phase describes a style of Native American projectile points, burial accompaniments and other archaeological remains which identify a second migration within California around 300 AD [ [http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/rogue-siskiyou/projects/planning/coast-health-forest-treat/05l-heritage.pdf Coastal Healthy Forest] ] The first major evidence of this came from Gunther Island Site 67 which is located on Indian Island on Humboldt Bay within the City of Eureka, California

L. L. Loud's 1918 archaeological excavation of Indian Island showed evidence of inhabitation since around 900 AD. Loud's description of salient artifacts, (projectile points, burial accompaniments, etc.) would later become known as the Gunther Pattern or Gunther Phase. The term is used to describe the final phase of native dominance lasting until historic times. [3]
