The 2008–09 Dinamo Riga season is the first season of the franchise in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). This is also inaugural season for the league. Dinamo Riga will play most of their home games in Arena Riga, however some matches will be held in Inbox.lv Ice hall, Piņķi. Pre-season

As it is the first season for the franchise, Dinamo Riga needed to gather their roster from nothing. Most of the team players are members of Latvia national team. First players for the team were announced in April 25. Dinamo Riga started their pre-season training camp in July 15. The camp continued till July 28 and took place in Liptovský Mikuláš, Slovakia. [cite web |url=http://www.dinamoriga.lv/zinas?zinaId=17 |title=Rīgas Dinamo dodas uz Slovākiju |publisher=DinamoRiga.lv |language=Latvian |date=June 15, 2008 |accessdate=2008-07-26] The first game in franchise history was held in July 25, when Dinamo Riga, after playing tie 1-1 in the regular time, in post-game shootout defeated MHk 32 Liptovský Mikuláš.

In August 2 Dinamo played their first home game, when they won Amur Khabarovsk in Riga. Then in Inbox.lv hall Dinamo won "Inbox.lv" tournament, in which they defeated Dinamo Minsk and Barys Astana. In August team also did participate in Tampere Cup (Tampere) and Governor's Cup (Mytishchi).
