Brendan Hansen (Australian politician)

Brendan Percival Hansen (21 August 1922 – 19 December 1999) was an Australian politician. Born in Maryborough, Queensland, he was educated at Christian Brothers High School before becoming a shipwright loftsman and carpenter. He was an official with the Federal Shipwrights and Ship Constructers Association and a Maryborough City Councillor before entering federal politics. In 1961, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Labor member for Wide Bay, the first time Labor had won the seat since 1914. He held the seat until his defeat in 1974. In 1977, he was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly as the member for Maryborough, a position he held until 1983. He died in 1999 and was posthumously awarded an Order of Australia medal for services to his community.

Brendan Hansen is honoured in his former electorate with a park in Granville named in his honour, and a government building, The Brendan Hansen Building in Hervey Bay.

Brendan married Moira O'Sullivan in 1960 at St Mary's Catholic Church, Maryborough. Moira was a light opera singer who remains active in the city's arts community.

Amongst Brendan's eight children is Mary Hansen, (1966-2002), singer and musician from UK based band Stereolab.ttpcite web|last=Carr|first=Adam|title=Australian Election Archive|work=Psephos, Adam Carr's Election Archive|url=h://psephos.adam-carr.net/countries/a/australia|year=2008|accessdate=2008-07-26]
