mr=SarimThe Sarim, or "forest of scholars," was a powerful faction of literati in the
Joseon Dynasty of Korea. It was typified by a rigidly conservative interpretation ofNeo-Confucian doctrine. Although the faction first emerged in the15th century , it coalesced around the teachings of the philosopherToegye in the 16th century. Thenceforth the faction's ideology was often referred to as "the learning of Toegye," or "Toegyehak."Following a series of brutal purges as it struggled for power with the established "Hungu" faction, the "Sarim" gained control of Joseon government in the late 16th century, during the reigns of Myeongjong and Seonjo.
