Augusto Vandor

Augusto Vandor

Augusto Timoteo Vandor (Bovril, Entre Ríos Province, 1923 - 30 June 1969), alias "El Lobo" (The Wolf) was an Argentine trade unionist leader and politician.

A former military, he headed the "Unión Obrera Metalúrgica" (UOM), a steelworkers' union, and was elected secretary of the CGT in 1962. During the military dictatorship headed by Onganía (1966-1970), Vandor promoted a "participationist" point of view, in favour of negotiations with the regime rather than headfront opposition. He launched in 1965, during the electoral campaign in Mendoza, the famous slogan "For a Peronism without Perón," declaring as well: "to save Perón, one has to be against Perón."

From his exile, the general sent his wife, Isabel Perón, to promote an alternative candidate, against the Vandoristas. But this lead to the defeat of both Peronists and Vandoristas, since the conservative candidate was finally elected [ [http://www.magicasruinas.com.ar/revdesto017c.htm La masacre de Ezeiza] es icon ] .

Briefly opposed to José Alonso, another trade unionist who was close to Isabel Perón and formed the "62 Organizaciones "De pie junto a Perón"", opposed to the syndicalist bureaucracy represented by Vandor, he finally agreed with him in a common participationist position. Vandor thereafter reconciled himself with Perón, who favoured a moderate criticism stance towards the junta, opting in favour of participationism.

Augusto Vandor was assassinated on 30 June, 1969, by members of the revolutionary branch of Peronism, who would later form the political and military organization "Descamisados".
