DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and the Ben Taub General Hospital.

Dr. Brunicardi was born in
Perth Amboy, New Jersey , onMay 10 ,1954 . He earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry with honors fromJohns Hopkins University inBaltimore, Maryland , in 1976. He graduated from Rutgers School of Medicine in Piscataway, New Jersey. Upon graduation from Rutgers Medical School in 1980, Dr. Brunicardi briefly took on a position as a research assistant in the Department of Anesthesiology atCornell University Medical Center inNew York, New York . From 1981-1982 he interned in surgery at Mount Zion Hospital inSan Francisco, California , and from 1982-1983 he was a Surgical Resident at theState University of New York (SUNY) Health Science Center in Brooklyn, New York. From 1983-1986 he was a research assistant in the Department of Surgery at SUNY Health Science Center. From 1986-1988 he was a Senior Resident in Surgery at SUNY, and from 1988-1989 he was the Chief Resident of General Surgery at SUNY Health Science Center.Career

Research Interests and Contributions
Dr. Brunicardi's clinical and research interests include molecular engineering of islets for transplantation, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer and physiology, minimally invasive surgery, and molecular surgery. His began these studies during his undergraduate years at Johns Hopkins University and continued them during medical school at Rutgers and his residency in general surgery at the State University of New York (SUNY) Health Science Center in Brooklyn. He also spent a three-year research fellowship in pancreatic physiology at SUNY and received national and international awards for this work. Of notable interest, Dr. Brunicardi was the primary investigator along with Dr. John Goss in the first study of pancreatic islet transplantation using a remote islet isolation center.
