The line ran fromShreveport, Louisiana , going east acrossLouisiana , and across the state ofMississippi , running through the towns ofVicksburg, Mississippi ,Jackson, Mississippi ,Meridian, Mississippi , andArtesia, Mississippi , then across theAlabama state lineTuscaloosa, Alabama , and finally (viaNorfolk Southern Railway trackage rights) intoBirmingham, Alabama . Midsouth had two other branches, with one toCounce, Tennessee , and a disconnected line fromGulfport, Mississippi toHattiesburg, Mississippi . Total milage was 1,212 miles worth of mostly formerIllinois Central Gulf 's east-west Shreveport - Meridian main line.Operations
On March 31, 1986, MidSouth Rail Corp. was created to purchase 373 miles of
Illinois Central Gulf , with start up operations on April 1, 1986. MSRC was mostly the ex-Illinois Central Gulf route betweenMeridian, Mississippi , andShreveport, Louisiana , with this line being built in 1833 by theClinton & Vicksburg . On September 8, 1987, MSRC acquired theNorth Louisiana and Gulf and its subsidiary,Central Louisiana and Gulf , These properties were combined as subsidiaryMidLouisiana Rail Corporation . On April 14, 1988 MidSouth merged with theGulf and Mississippi , itself anIllinois Central Gulf spinoff. MSRC operated this property under the name ofSouthRail .Kansas City Southern takeover
On January 11, 1994,
Kansas City Southern Railway took over operations of all of Midsouth Rail Corp.'s lines, creating its Meridian Corridor to connect with theNorfolk Southern Railway .
