- Butterfly (game)
Butterfly is a two-player
abstract strategy game fromMozambique . The game is related todraughts andAlquerque . It is the same game asLau kata kati fromIndia which may suggest a historical connection between the two games.Goal
To capture all of your opponent's pieces
Equipment
The board is essentially two triangles joined together at a common vertex which makes the board look like a butterly. Each triangle will be referred to as a wing in this article. Two lines cross the breadth of each triangle forming the second and third ranks, and another line that runs down the length of the triangle through the common vertex. There is a total of 19 intersection points for the pieces to be played upon.
Each player has nine pieces. One player plays black, and the other player plays white, however, any two colors or distinguishable objects will suffice.
Game Play and Rules
1. One player places its pieces on one wing, and the other player places its pieces on the other wing. Only the vertex point where the two wings meet is empty in the beginning.
2. Black traditionally starts first, and moves one of its pieces onto the vertex point which will be captured by White.
3. Players alternate their turns. Only one piece is either moved or used for capture per turn. All pieces move one space at a time to an unoccupied point following the pattern on the board.
4. Captures are the same as in Draughts. A capture is made when one player decides to jump over an adjacent enemy piece. The jump must be done in a straight line following the pattern on the board. The enemy pieces are removed from the board. Captures are compulsory. Multiple jumps are allowed with exactly one vacant space between the enemy pieces.
5. If a player has more than one possible jump option, then the player is allowed to pick whichever jump he or she wishes. If a player does not commit a compulsory jump during his or her turn, then that player loses that one piece from the board that should have committed a jump..
