Northville Psychiatric Hospital

Northville Psychiatric Hospital

History

The Northville Psychiatric Hospital(NPH) was established in 1952. Its purpose was to provide high quality inpatient psychiatric services to adults with mental illnesses.
Closing
It was announced that the NPH was to be closed by the Department of Community Health (DCH) on November 18, 2002. By 2003 all patients had been transferred to a community setting or another state run psychiatric facility. Closing staff had removed all remaining equipment (there is still a lot of equipment in the buildings, everything from patient journals to wheelchairs to old bottles of mercury) by December of 2003. The hospital was closed because of several reasons. First, a declining number of patients in the statewide mental health system. Second, a decline in the workforce, resulting from an early retirement rate, caused the hospital to be shut down. At the time of the closing NPH had 536 employees and 239 patients.

Annexation

The land containing the NPH is planned to be annexed to the neighboring city of Livonia. As many people in the cities of Northville and Northville Township are against the annexation, this decision may be changed. The people against the annexation have set up rallies and protests, along with a website, [http://www.stopannexation.com www.stopannexation.com]
