- Paineñamcu
Paineñamcu [According to Rosales, Historia..., Tomo II, Capítulo LI, pg. 221.] or
Paynenancu [Carvallo,Descripcion Histórico...] or Alonso Diaz [Lobera calls him Diego Díaz, Crónica..., Libro tercero, Parte tercera, Capítulo XXXII; Rosales and Carvallo call him Alonso Diaz] , was theMapuche toqui from 1574 to 1584. Alonso Diaz was amestizo Spanish soldier offended because the Governor of Chile did not promote him to the to the officer rank ofalféres , who subsequently went over to the Mapuche in 1572. He took the Mapuche name of Paineñamcu and because of his military skills was electedtoqui in 1574 following the death ofPaillataru . He was captured in battle in 1584 and saved his life when he betrayed the location to his captors of arenegade Spaniard and amulato that were leaders in the Mapuche army. He was executed later that same year inSantiago, Chile when the Spanish beleived he was communicating with the rebellious Mapuche.Cayancaru succeaded him as toqui after his capture.References
