The Wonders of Nature by Josiah Priest was published in 1826. [http://books.google.ca/books?id=DJsRAAAAIAAJ Original copy in the New York Public Library, digitized 7 September 2006.] Some critics of Mormonism such as Jerald and Sandra Tanner and Richard Arbanes [http://en.fairmormon.org/Book_of_Mormon_plagiarism_accusations/The_Wonders_of_Nature Verify credibility|date=September 2008] consider this a relevant work for its historical connection to Mormonism. Author David Persuitte concluded that there were a number of parallels between the Book of Mormon and The Wonders of Nature. [Persuite, "Joseph Smith and the Origins of the Book of Mormon"] One criticism of the origin of the Book of Mormon is the fact that this book was published five years before the "Book of Mormon" was initially published and the connection of the author to a close associate of Joseph Smith, Jr., Oliver Cowdery. The chapter that is of interest in regards to this subject is "Northern and Western Indians, Proofs that the Indians of North America were lineally descended from the ancient Hebrews."

Page 377 indicates that the origins of the North American Indians were speculated to be of Hebrew descent for at least 50 years before the writing of this book.
