John Levee received a master degree in
philosophy fromUCLA and became an aviator in theSecond World War . After the war he decided to stay to work as a painter inMontparnasse .His early painting was inspired by the
New York School ofAbstract Expressionism , which includedFranz Kline ,Robert Motherwell ,Jackson Pollock ,Mark Rothko ,Ad Reinhardt ,Willem de Kooning andPhilip Guston , among others. After a period ofhard-edge painting based ongeometric abstraction in the 1960s, Levee returned to his morespontaneous Abstract Expressionism style, often usingcollage elements with loose brush work typical oflyrical abstraction .Reference Works in Public Collections
