John Nicolson (journalist)

John Nicolson is a Scottish television newscaster and journalist based in London. He has reported for and presented many high profile network news shows in Britain.

Born in Glasgow he was educated at the University of Glasgow and Harvard where he was Harkness Fellow in American Government at the Kennedy School. As a student he first captured press attention by winning the World Universities Debating Championship at Princeton, New Jersey.

He worked as a speechwriter for Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (Dem. NY) on Capitol Hill. As a student he appeared on BBC Scotland's "Mr Speaker Sir". But his network broadcasting career began with the BBC youth DEF II programme Open to Question in 1988.

After moving to London he reported for a variety of BBC programmes including "On the Record", "Public Eye", "Assignment"," Panorama", "Watchdog", "The Late Show" and numerous live general election, European election, and budget programmes. Nicolson was the studio presenter for the BBC on September 11 2001 as the twin towers collapsed anchoring live on BBC News 24, BBC One and BBC World for which the BBC won a Foreign Press Association award for best breaking news.

In 2001 he was the first prominent UK news presenter to announce that he was gay and in a long term relationship. He appeared as himself in "The Trial of Tony Blair", an Alistair Beaton/More4 Drama first aired in 2007. He is a weekly guest in the US on the ABC network radio programme "The John Batchelor Show."

John Nicolson lives in central London in a Georgian house which he is reported to have restored from dereliction.
