Ferrari/Maserati engine

Ferrari/Maserati engine

The Ferrari/Maserati engine is a current engine series, itself an engine subdivision of the Ferrari Tipo series, though not sharing any mechanical technologies with previous models.

hared specifications

The Ferrari/Maserati architecture is angled at 90 degrees and displaces between 4.2 L and 6.0 L, producing between 390 and 651 horsepower. All engines are naturally-aspirated, have at least eight cylinders, incorporate dual overhead camshafts, variable valve timing, and four valves per cylinder.

The architecture was jointly developed by Ferrari and Maserati, and has been produced in various configurations for cars under those badges as well as for a single Alfa Romeo model. All three companies are owned by the Fiat Group, under whom the engine sharing program was organized.

V8

Most instances of the Ferrari/Maserati architecture are in the V8 configuration. This was the first configuration and produces anywhere from 390 to 490 horsepower.

V12

The V12 version of this engine was derived from the already existent V8. In the Ferrari Enzo, it has set the record for the most powerful naturally-aspirated engine in a road car. The 5998 cc engine, designed for the Enzo, is known within Ferrari as the "Tipo F140", whereas the very similar "Tipo F133F" engine displaces 5999 cc and was designed for the Ferrari 599 as the most powerful series-production Ferrari engine.
