La Palmera opened in 1970 as Padre Staples Mall and the largest retail shopping mall in the
Corpus Christi, Texas area. The mall was proposed in the spring of 1968 and its construction was completed in Spring of 1970. The Mall was started by Roy M. Smith and Ennis Joslin. The W.M. Bevly family became part owners two years later. The mall would include a movie theater,food court ,carousel , and 3 anchors. Its major anchors all came from the area of downtownCorpus Christi, Texas .JCPenney ,Dillards , and Bealls would be the three major anchors including the Movie Theater and Woolworth's serving as junior anchors.Luby's Cafeteria came inline 1971.In 1986,
Foley's joined the mall as the fifth anchor. The movie theater closed in 1997. In 1998, Woolworth closed and was replaced with mall space. Palais Royal closed in 2001. In 2006 theFoley's anchor at Padre Stales Mall was acquired byMacy's . In spring 2007, plans were announced for major renovations which would bring in a 42,000 square footForever 21 store as well as afood court , the latter replacing the vacant Palais Royal. La Palmera has stores such as American Eagle, Abercrombie and Fitch, Aeropostale, Nine West, Pac Sun, Rave, Shi , Victoria's Secret, Forever 21, Express Men/Women, Gap Women/Men/Kids, Bath & Body Works, New York & Company. Renovations were said to be done in late October of 2009. The food court is expected to be finished before the 2008 Christmas season.Anchor stores
