Brennstoff=Bavarian C II.1 or C II (Stütztender) engines were
steam locomotives with theRoyal Bavarian State Railways ("Königlich Bayerische Staatsbahn").This locomotive was manufactured as an articulated steam engine, based on an idea that had been developed by Wilhelm von Engerth (c.f. the
Engerth locomotive ), whereby theboiler barrel was supported by the tender. The Engerth design thus articulated the tender with the mainlocomotive frame , allowing some of the weight of the fuel and water to be carried on thedriving wheel s to improve adhesion. Because the engines did not ride smoothly however, they were converted in 1870. They then had a 1B axle arrangement. After the boiler had been replaced, they once again reverted to support tender locomotives with a C3 axle arrangement. A total of five were built by Maffei. They were named: HERCULES, HECTOR, ACHILLES, AJAX and THESEUS.The remainder of the
Bavarian C II series were built as standard 0-6-0 engines with 4-wheeled tenders.Literature
