A Man Called Hero (中華英雄) is a film based on the comic series Chinese Hero by Hong Kong artist Ma Wing-Shing.

Plot

In 1914, Hero Hua was given the Red Sword (his family heirloom) and was accepted by Pride as a disciple after passing a test set by Pride. However, he returned home to find that his family had been killed by foreign businessmen over an article written by his father regarding the ills of trading in opium. That night, Hero breaks up the foreigners' party, and slays them for revenge. Hero then left for America after having a last meeting with his love interest Jade.

16 years later, Hero's childhood friend Sheng arrived in America together with Sword, Hero's son. When they reached China House in Chinatown, they met Monk Lohan. Monk Lohan told them about how he met Hero Hua on the ship bound for America and their experiences as labourers in Steel Bull Canyon. Later at Jade's grave, Sheng told them of how he and Jade travelled to America 16 years ago to search for Hero and their tearful reunion, as well as Hero and Jade's marriage.

They met Shadow, elder disciple brother of Hero, who told them about their skirmish with a group of Japanese ninjas and the story behind the Sword's birth. Sword and his twin sister was born in China House during a blaze set by the Japanese ninjas. Sword's twin sister was taken away at birth by the traitor Bigot and no news had been heard about her since. Shadow also told them about Hero's encounter with a fortune teller, who told Hero that he was born under the Star of Death and will be condemned to a life of loneliness. Lastly, Shadow told them of their Master Pride's duel with Invincible in Japan over the rightul possession of China Secret, a martial arts manual. Pride had also transferred all his martial arts to Hero, including China Secret, on his deathbed.

At China House, the Boss, along with Sword, Shadow and the others planned for a jailbreak on Steel Bull Canyon to free their fellow countrymen. They pretended to be opera actors and totally caught the American supervisors off guard with their surprise attack and succeeded in freeing the Chinese labourers. However, Monk Lohan was killed in action and Hero Hua appears at the critical moment to assist the Chinese.

Sword was finally reunited with his father whom he had never seen before but his father maintained a cold attitude towards him, constantly avoiding him. Hero Hua believed that the Star of Death ruled over him and he would lose his loved ones, hence he had to spend the rest of his life in solitude. At the same time, Invincible arrives in America for the final duel with Hero Hua to determine who would be the ultimate winner. Hero and Invincible fought atop the Statue of Liberty which ended with Hero emerging as the victor. Before the film ends, Sword and Sheng were seen preparing to leave America for home while Hero observes them secretly from a distance.
