Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar

Kalaithanthai Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar (Tamil: கருமுத்து தியாகராஜன் செட்டியார்), son of Muthukaruppan Chettiar and Vinaitherthal achi (Sivakami achi) was born on 16 June 1893 in the Sivagangai district of Tamil Nadu, India, the tenth and last child in his family. He was educated at St Thomas' College, Sri Lanka. He edited a newspaper championing the cause of the plantation workers. He returned from Sri Lanka when Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi returned from South Africa, and was elected Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), Madras region. Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar took an active part in the struggle for Indian Independence. He founded fourteen textile mills, nineteen educational institutions, the Bank of Madurai, and the Madurai Insurance Company. For a number of years he published a daily called Tamil Nadu Daily. He was an ardent lover of architecture, music, and literature. Taking an active part in education, he founded numerous schools, such as Thiagarajar Preceptors College, the Thiagarajar school of Management, and the Thiagarajar College of Engineering.
