"Mineshaft Magazine" is an independent international art magazine. It was started in 1999 by Everett Rand and Gioia Palmieri in Guilford, Vermont. First a magazine with a large focus on poetry and literature, the magazine began to publish comics after Robert Crumb began to contribute in 2000. The British newspaper, The Guardian's newsblog [ [http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/news/archives/arts_and_culture/2005/03/08/crumbland_a_brief_guide.html Dennis, Jon. "Crumbland: A brief guide." History

"Mineshaft" was the idea of Everett Rand who was inspired by his friendship and correspondence with Irving Stettner who published the legendary underground magazine, "Stroker". "Stroker" published Henry Miller and Paul Bowles. The name for the magazine came from Rand's favorite bar in La Paz, Bolivia where he and co-editor, Gioia Palmieri, lived in the early 1990s cite web | url = http://www.mineshaftmagazine.com/history.html | title = "How it all began... Mineshaft | first=Gioia |last=Palmieri | publisher = Mineshaft Magazine | accessdate = 2008-07-23 ] . The first issue of the magazine featured a drawing by Irving Stettner. After issue #4, Rand wrote to Robert Crumb who responded by sending a packet of sketchbook drawings. After issue #5, Crumb designed logos for the magazine which "Mineshaft" has been using ever since. Besides the magazine's logos, Robert Crumb's regular contributions include 9 front covers, 8 back covers, and a total to date of 124 pages of artwork and letterscite web | url = http://www.mineshaftmagazine.com/issuesindex.html | title = "The Mineshaft Index to Back Issues | publisher = Mineshaft Magazine | accessdate = 2008-07-28 ] . After living and publishing "Mineshaft" in Vermont and West Virginia, the editors, Rand and Palmieri, moved their operations to Durham, North Carolina [ [http://www.indyweek.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A23260 Valentine, John.
