- Gottlieb Mohnike
Gottlieb Christian Friedrich Mohnike (
January 6 ,1781 -July 6 ,1841 ) was a Germantheologian andphilologist who was a native ofGrimmen . He was the father of physicianOtto Gottlieb Mohnike (1814-1887).He studied theology at the Universities of Greifswald and Jena, and afterwards spent several years as a private instructor on the island of
Rügen . In 1813 he becamepastor at St. Jakobi Church inStralsund , and in 1824 was awarded an honorary doctorate oftheology from the University of Greifswald.Mohnike was a founder of Nordic philology, and is remembered for his translation and edition of the
Heimskringla andFæreyinga Saga . He also translated contemporary Scandinavian writings, such as the works of Swedish poetEsaias Tegnér (1782-1846).
