Duyvis

Duyvis

Duyvis is a Dutch brand of salty snacks, of amongst others peanuts and nuts. Under the Duyvis brand also dip sauses are sold.

History

The history of Duyvis begins with Teewis Duyvis, who inherited an oil mill from his uncle in the Netherlands in 1806. Such an oil mill was used for the production of cattle-fodder. The oil from the linseed was a just a by-product.

The grandson of Teewis, who was also called Teewis, took over the company in 1850. The company expanded with several oil mills and is called Teewis Duyvis Jansz., after the grandson of the first Teewis.

In 1880 Ericus Gerardus Duyvis, son of the second Teewis, builds a steam oil factory. He still produces mainly cattle-fodder. As of 1908 the company starts exporting linseed oil and in 1920 it starts with the refinery of the oil.

Between 1920 and 1930 the company becomes one of the largest oil exporting companies of the Netherlands. During the crisis years turnover declines and the company starts producing salad oil for consumers. During World War II the import of the necessary raw materials for the oil production declined. Therefore the company switches to other vegetable oils. The company keeps focusing on the consumer market and starts selling branded products. In 1957 Mayolande, a French daughter is founded, which sells products under the Bénénuts brand.

In 1958 the company receives the status of a ‘Royal’ company. In 1961 the company starts the with the production and selling of bagged peanuts and other nuts. In the same year the company is taken over by Akzo. This means the end of a 150 year old family business, and because of this takeover Duyvis loses its ‘Royal’ status. In 1987 Duyvis is taken over by Douwe Egberts. During these years a new factory is built in Zaandam and Duyvis becomes the largest peanut and nut brand in the Netherlands. In 2006 Douwe Egberts (part of Sara Lee) sells Duyvis to soft drink and snack manufacturer PepsiCo. PepsiCo is amongst others the owner of the brands Pepsi, Lay’s and Quaker.

In 2006 Duyvis celebrated its 200th anniversary.

Products

Duyvis peanuts exist in many varieties. Besides plain peanuts there are peanuts that are roasted, marinated, sprinkled with herbs or in combination with other seeds and salty snacks. Some of the peanuts are covered with crunchy coatings of dough in different flavours. Besides peanuts, Duyvis produces noble nuts, some of them in combination with fruit and flavoured with herbs and spices.
