The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act is an unenacted bill which was introduced in the Congress of the United States. The bill's purpose is to close a loophole in an American law intended to protect women and racial minorities from pay discrimination. The bill was inspired by Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.
The bill was defeated in April 2008 by Republicans in the Senate who cited the possibility of frivolous lawsuits in their opposition of the bill. [ [http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/24/washington/24cong.html?_r=2&sq=&oref=slogin New York Times] "Republican Senators Block Pay Discrimination Measure"]
In the 2008 elections, the Democratic Party has criticized the Republican Party for defeating the bill, specifically citing Republican Presidential candidate John McCain's opposition. Democratic candidate Barack Obama supported the bill.
