Nathan Sassaman (b. 1963 or 1964) is a retired United States Army officer and the author of the book Warrior King (with Joe Layden) about his experiences in the Iraq War.
He commanded the Fourth Infantry Division's 1-8 Battalion in Iraq in 2003-2004 as a lieutenant colonel. He was awarded a Bronze Star for valor. An incident in which some of his troops forced two Iraqi civilian detainees to jump into the Tigris River, one of whom allegedly drowned, led to a reprimand that effectively ended his career. He retired in 2005.
He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy, where he played football. He is married and has two children. They live in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
