style21 = style="text-align:center;"Maine School Administrative Disctict 31, or MSAD #31 is a school district that serves the towns of Lowell, Burlington, Edingburg, Enfield, Howland, Maxfield, and Passadumkeag. [http://www.msad31.com MSAD #31.com] A total of 3 schools are managed in the school district, and there is a total number of 652 students between the 3 schools. The districts total revenue is $7,708,000. The districts total revenue per student is $11,823. Currently, the three schools are in two separate buildings. Penobscot Valley High School
Penobscot Valley High School, or PVHS is the only 9-12 school in the District. There are approximately 211 students enrolled, and 20 teachers employed. 54% of students attending Penobscot Valley are Male, and 46% Female. There are 59 students in the Freshmen class, 56 students in the Sophomore class, 58 students in the Junior class, and 38 students in the Senior class.
"Spring Fling"
"Spring Fling" is a big event for Penobscot Valley students. At the beginning of every spring, there is a day full of fun activities for all students, including a 3 Point Shootout, a Root Beer Chug, a Dodge Ball Tournament, and much more. The object of the day, is to score points for your class, most often the Senior Class is the winning class.
George Sereyko Memorial Gymnasium
George Sereyko Memorial Gymnasium, or the Big Gym, is a standard sized gymnasium. The Big Gym is the separation point for HMS and PVHS. The Big Gym is technically a part of the high school, but when unoccupied, students from HMS will use it. In the winter 2007-2008, water began to leak underneath the gym floor. This caused large bubbles to form under the wood, destroying the floor. Work will begin mid September to rebuild the floor. This work is expected to complete in late October.
Local Sports
PVHS students have an opportunity to play many different sports consisting of: Basketball, Baseball, Volleyball, Cheerleading, Soccer, Softball, Football and Wrestling. Varsity Basketball is a big sport for the small town school, where often parents, grandparents, friends, teachers, and towns people come out to cheer on their home team the "Howlers". There is also a local football team that plays at "Libby Field" right across from Penobscot Valley High School. They are in a private league, out of Aroostook County, although they Howland is located in Penobscot County.
Renovation of 2007
In the summer of 2007, PVHS underwent a massive renovation, before this, the school had many problems. The school had a very limited heating system, leaving students forced to wear jackets into class. Roofs would leak in the cramped classrooms. The renovation gave the school a complete makeover. The schools walls and roofs were redone, leaving a state approved infrastructure. Old tiles in the hallways were replaced with newer ones. The renovation left the school more atheistically pleasing. The old Workshop room, abandoned, was transformed into a new music building. Before the renovation, students had to walk outside into a run down building to go to their music classes. Under the hood changes included an advanced heating system, with a digital thermostat in every room. The school has plans to put solar panels on the roof to help with the electricity bill.
"The Portables"
"The Portables", are a series of portable classrooms connected by a covered boardwalk. The Spanish, French, IT Department, Special Services, NWEA lab /Summer School, and the Central Office are located in this area. Penobscot Valley is the only school known to have a "Boardwalk" that goes entirely along the portable class rooms.
Hichborn Middle School
Hichborn Middle School, or HMS, was constructed in 1971. HMS currently serves 152 students in the area grades 6-8. 50% of students in the school, are qualified to receive free or reduced lunch. In the summer of 2007, the school underwent a minor renovation, along with the High school. The teachers bathrooms were transformed into one handicap restroom. Some doorways were redone, and the locker room doors were moved. There are plans to renovate the outdated restrooms and locker rooms, which have not been updated since the schools construction in 1971. HMS houses the Jim Curry Library Media Center, an up-to-date library that serves the middle and high school. The middle school has a small Gymnasium, called the multi-purpose room. Most PE classes are taken there, with the exception of the High School Gym, when it is unoccupied.
Enfield Station School
"Sited on what was the former Cole Farm, in Enfield, Maine, on land donated by the family of Galen Cole, the Enfield Station School building opened to students in January 1993.
Three district elementary schools (Ring Street in Howland, Curtis School in West Enfield, and the Burlington School in Burlington) closed and all students moved to the new school. Opening with 400 students, the school currently serves a little over 300 students in grades kindergarten through five. Each grade has three classes, with the exception of third grade that has two (classes)." [http://www.msad31.com/content/48/Enfield_Station/ Enfield Station School Home Page]
